The Ganjam Zilla Bikash Manch, a socio-cultural organisation led by its president Rajendra Panda and chief convenor advocate Dr Siba Prasad Mishra, submitted a memorandum for Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to the Brahmapur Sub-Collector here on Monday.
The manch demanded immediate renovation of Bahan Nala that connects 27 out of 42 wards under the Brahmapur Municipal Corporation (BeMC). The crucial drain passes through Gajapatinagar, Nilachal Nagar, Kharavelnagar, Basudev Nagar, Sidharth Nagar and Brahma Nagar. Thousands of residents of these areas face flooding and waterlogging in rainy season every year, it said.
The forum said that the Bahan Nala creates much hardship for the residents of Gajapatinagar, especially, since the water in rainy season is not released due to clogging of the drain and overflows the nearby area. Often the unhygienic drain water enters into the house in the low-lying areas, making life of the local residents miserable.
In the name of renovation, the Irrigation Department (Chikiti Division) carried out some superficial repair works earlier but it failed to yield any result, the manch pointed out.
Ironically, the rural sewerage water discharge system of 27 wards of Brahmapur is connected to the nala. When the water of the nala overflows into the road, it disrupts communication, besides making the entire ambience polluted, said Dr Siba Prsad Das.
The residents of eight out of 15 lanes and sub-lanes of Gajapatinagar area including Nilachal Nagar and Basudev Nagar, in particular, are forced to shift to some other areas along with their belongings since the entire area remains marooned with rainwater every year. These residents return home only after the rain stops or the stagnated water is completely drained out, it said.
A two- decade long public demand for renovation of the nala remains unheeded, Rajendra Panda alleged.
If the BeMC doesn’t have funds, the local MP and MLA LAD funds can be utilised for the renovation of the nala, the forum suggested.
