Opinion: CR City Council Dan Bahan: Working together to build a ... - The Gazette

I am running for City Council driven by a deep commitment to our community. Having grown up here since the age of five, I've witnessed both the challenges and the potential of our city. My background in graphic design, over a decade of technology experience, and 15 years as a martial arts instructor uniquely position me to address the issues that matter most to our residents.

I believe in a city where everyone has a fair chance at success, where our streets are safe, our schools are well-funded, and our neighborhoods are walkable and thriving. These beliefs drive my approach to three key issues:

1. Infrastructure and quality of life: I subscribe to the principle of “Potholes Over Politics.” Our roads and infrastructure impact every resident, regardless of political affiliation. I'm committed to prioritizing road repairs and investing in our infrastructure. Smooth roads, safe streets, and well-maintained public spaces are essential for our quality of life.

2. Education and fiscal Responsibility: “Don't Close Our Schools” is a rallying cry because I believe in investing in our existing neighborhood schools rather than diverting resources to new projects. I'll advocate for sensible fiscal decisions that prioritize our children's education, ensuring every child has access to quality learning environments.

3. Walkable neighborhoods and community growth: My vision includes creating 'Walkable Neighborhoods' that promote health, reduce traffic congestion, and strengthen our community bonds. I'll work to make our city more pedestrian and cyclist-friendly, creating vibrant, connected neighborhoods.

My approach to consensus-building draws from my experience connecting with people from various backgrounds. By finding common ground through shared interests and presenting well-researched, data-driven arguments, I foster understanding and open communication. This approach transcends differences, helping me bridge gaps and find compromises.

I'm running to build a city that's equitable, safe, and prosperous. With your support, we can prioritize “Potholes Over Politics,” ensure our schools remain open, and create walkable neighborhoods. Let's work together to make our vision for a better community a reality.

Dan Bahan is a candidate in Cedar Rapids City Council District 4.
