At the Hay Festival to talk about what the event’s website terms ‘the systemic biases’ of cricket, Stephen Fry, the celebrated comedian, said of MCC: “It has a public face that is deeply disturbing, sort of beetroot-coloured gentlemen in yellow and orange blazers sitting in this space in front of the Long Room and looking as if they’d come out of an Edwardian cartoon.” We must wait to see how the club’s members react to being so described by Mr Fry – for myself, not owning a club blazer (they do
Question of the day: what is the job of a deputy party leader? Previous incumbents of the post in the Labour Party never doubted the answer: it was to support the leader publicly and to advise him privately. That was how John Prescott, probably the party’s most successful deputy to the party’s most successful leader, saw it.

A long, prosperous well-lived life came to an end Friday morning, December 13 when James Edward Bahan died at his home in Newport Beach. He is survived by Mary, his wife of 64 years, and six of his eight children: James, Reno, NV; Mary, Corona del Mar; Peter, Newport Beach; Neil, San Clemente; Paul, Laguna Beach; and Margaret, Oakland. He is also survived by his sister Ellen Baxter and 15 grandchildren. He was predeceased by sons Thomas, Reno, NY and John of Newport Beach. Born 98 years ago in Schenechtady, New York, Jim, along with his brother Joe, proved himself an apt businessman at the age of 16, when the two brothers ran their dad’s milk business while the elder Bahans were on vacation; within six weeks there were thirty new customers, and when the family moved to Southern California the boys were on their way. From a modest beginning of two trucks purchased on a $100 down payment the operation grew into a thriving enterprise, beginning in 1931with Royal Farms Dairy in South Gate (sold to Adohr Frams in 1967) and resulting in many partnerships, including Driftwood Dairy of West Covina, Anderson Dairy in Las Vegas, Model Dairy in Reno, AAA Egg Farms in San Jacinto Valley, and Beckley Ice Cream in Long Beach. His business acumen led him into diverse fields and his holdings included milk producton properties, industrial catering, and horses. Highly respected throughout the dairy industry, he was also President of the South Gate Chamber of Commerce and a longtime member of the Jonathan Club. But always, family was his top priority. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 1441 West Balboa Blvd., Newport Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to his favorite charities, the James and Mary Bahan Scholarship Fund at Loyola Marymount University or to the Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale Arizona.

In December 2021, Giovanni Pernice, paired with actress Rose Ayling-Ellis, was one half of arguably the most popular partnership in Strictly Come Dancing’s history. The duo claimed the glitterball that year and their silent Couple’s Choice dance won a Bafta. “If social media makes you despair about humanity, and think we’ve suddenly turned into a mean and divisive society,” Richard Osman tweeted at the time, “just watch #Gogglebox watching Rose and Giovanni
